Pete Seeger Rest in Peace

Pete Seeger passed away yesterday at the age of 94.

There's a great piece in the NY Times about his life and impact upon the music scene that says much more than I could ever say, I encourage you to check it out. Also worth checking out is the 2007 PBS Documentary about Pete Seeger's life and music entitled 'The Power of Song'. There's a great tribute that Bruce Springsteen gave on Seeger's 90th Birthday that's worth watching as well. Click on the links to enjoy the music.

NPR Tiny Desk Concerts

I'm always fascinated by musical performances that are done in small spaces and none can be smaller than at NPR with their Tiny Desk Concerts which have been on the go since 2008. Some of the artists I have to admit I haven't heard of before but I thought it would be cool to bring together in one place a mix of those concerts covering a wide spectrum of musical genres. Click on the links to enjoy the music.

Tiny Desk Concerts from NPR's All Songs Considered features your favorite musicians performing at Bob Boilen's desk in the NPR Music office.

Tidy Tune #25: Jump - Aztec Camera

Originally recorded as a b-side for the single 'All I Need Is Everything' and a few months later they went in and recorded an extended version featuring a rip roaring guitar solo! (Roddy goes Heavy Metal!)

Danny Federici - The Phantom

Today would have been the birthday of Danny Federici. Born Daniel Paul Federici in Flemington New Jersey, he began playing with Bruce back in the 1960's and did so up until 2007 when it was annouced that he would have to take a leave of absence due to illness and to have treatment for Melanoma. His final performance with The E Street Band was on March 20th 2008 in Indianapolis. On the 17th April 2008 Danny 'The Phantom' Federici passed away after suffering for three years with Melanoma.

Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes and Live Recordings of Tour

'High Hopes' album debuted at  the #1 spot in 10 Countries in the week of its release: US, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Holland, Canada, and Spain.

There's been a lot of interesting debate about the decision by Springsteen's management to begin releasing concert recordings via the sale of USB Wristbands at $40 (or 30 Euros)

30.00

30.00

a pop!

This news sparked a whole heap of fury from Bruce fans across the board as it seems that if you wanted more than one show you would have to fork out $40 per show and you'd end up with a whole pile of USB wrist bands.

One fan was so fed up with this news that he recorded a parody of 'Born to Run' entitled 'Bruce Springsteen Downloadable USB Scam'.

It seems that 'fan power' has helped change some things with regard to getting hold of recordings of the shows from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand because it has also been announced that these shows in addition to the USB wristband sales model, Springsteen will also be offering direct audio downloads through his official Live Nation online store following each show on the upcoming leg, with no physical purchase required (meaning you don't have to purchase the USB wristband). There will be two options for audio formats: MP3 (320 kbps) or FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec). Pricing will match Pearl Jam's, at $9.99 for MP3 or $14.99 for FLAC.
This news I'm sure will be greeted more favourably.

This is how Rolling Stone Magazine reported on the change.

It will be interesting to see how this new course of action takes off and whether it will be the death knell for Bruceleggers!

Tidy Tune #22: Fox on the Run - Girlschool

Having done cover versions of Motorhead, Kiss, T-Rex and erm...Gary Glitter...this one is probably my favourites by Girlschool . A cover of The Sweet's 1975 Single 'Fox on the Run' (a record that was surprisingly written by The Sweet themselves rather than Chinn and Chapman).

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Wig Out at Jagbags (2014)

I feel a little under-qualified to be posting about Stephen Malkmus as I actually know very little of his work since he left Pavement and so below are links for tracks from the new album in order for you to decide for yourself.

One of my mates, Rue, was talking this album up a lot and since I bow to his superior knowledge on these matters I decided to buy the album totally off the cuff without even hearing a track (I have adopted a similar course of action for other purchases in the past and have rarely - if ever - been disappointed).

Obviously Rue must have some inside track to finding good tunes because he hasn't failed me with this recommendation. On the first two listens there are a number of tracks that I have really enjoyed: 'The Janitor Revealed', 'Houston Hades', 'Rumble at the Rainbo', 'Chartjunk', and 'Surreal Teenagers'.

Tidy Tunes #19: Hurt - of Verona

It's not often when you hear a cover version that blows you away but Johnny Cash doing Nine Inch Nail's 'Hurt' is one of those moments. Cash made the song his own. So hearing another version of the same song has a lot to stand up to but of Verona manage to pull it off in their own way.
Tidy Tunes this week will focus on Cover Versions

Tidy Tune #15: I Can't Explain - The Who

On this day in 1965, The Who released their first single 'I Can't Explain'. With Jimmy Page on guitar (though some question if his contribution to the song actually made the final cut!)  and The Ivy League on backing vocals, it went on to reach No.8 on the UK chart.

Christine McVie Returns to The Mac!

The news that Christine McVie is returning to Fleetwood Mac 15 years after her departure. There's a nice piece in The Guardian about it.

She had joined them on stage in London last year. She has been open to the possibility of rejoining the band but hadn't been asked. Mick Fleetwood recently announced that she would return to the band: "This is the worst kept secret there is, but Christine McVie will be rejoining Fleetwood Mac."

John McVie continues to recover after receiving treatment to deal with his cancer issues.
