Eddie and The Hot Rods - Dave Higgs Celebration 27th Feb 2014

I had previously posted about the annoucement of the passing of Mr Dave Higgs (founding member of Eddie and the Hot Rods), and just wanted to add this little update.

Eddie and the Hot Rods posted this on their fb page today:

"Well what a night that was, The Oysterfleet on Canvey Island rocked big time. All in memory of Dave Higgs RIP and raising money for McMillan nurses. The 45's opened proceedings and what a great start, they were fantastic. The present line up did what they had to do and hit people with some Rods classics and their own tunes, the original line up then turned in a brilliant performance that really turned back the clock, finaly all band members onstage for Gloria and Get out of Denver, it was a fantastic night, thanks to everybody for turning out."

There's a few videos about, not necessarily great quality but I thought I'd stick the links up for them here.

Remembering Larry Norman

On this day back in 2008, Larry Norman, pioneer of Christian Rock and Roll music passed out of this world and into the next. He was one of those chaps whose music was  maybe a bit too religious for the world and maybe a bit too 'secular' for the Church. He was misunderstood by many and was a little controversial at times but one thing you could never deny with him was his desire to share the message of the Gospel in pretty much every place he went. He was passionate about that to the end.

Most people reading this might be totally unaware of the life and music of Larry Norman. It might not be your "thing" but give a wee click on some of the links to check it out.

His music was a great help to me at a difficult time in my life and I'm ever grateful to those who first slipped a cassette of his music into my hands many, many years ago.

 Evangelist Without Portfolio.

On August 4th, 2007 Larry performed in New York City in what turned out to be his last official solo concert. On both piano and guitar, Norman played music spanning his entire career, spoke intimately to the audience, and finished the performance with a remarkable medley of some of his most poignant songs. Not the best quality film but it certainly offers an great insight into Larry and his music.

A Few Other Larry Tunes:

These two links will take you to the Drew Marshall Show page and you can download the interviews and tributes by right clicking on the little icon and when menu comes down choose 'Save Target As'. Well worth listening to.

Rewind: Dead Boys - Young, Loud and Snotty (Sire Records 1977)

Was a bit shocked to see Uncut Magazine's 50 Greatest American Punk LP's and to notice that the debut album by the Dead Boys was strangely absent! The follow-up, 'We Have Come For Your Children' (Full Album) came in at #15.

David Bowie Series Update

I was a little bit annoyed about The Brit Awards the other night. Kate Moss accepted an award on behalf of David Bowie and read a message from him. I noticed that she actually only had one card with her and not two. The second one had another message from David Bowie and I can exclusively reveal what the contents of it were:

"I am a little disheartened to discover that Soundtrack4Life have delayed the continuation of a series looking at my music from the 1960's up to the present day due to a slight technical glitch. I have been in touch and have been informed that the writer has been sidelined due to listening the three Tin Machine albums in a row. I can only apologise for making them and causing him to stumble in his quest to inform the public of my good musical journey!"

So that's where we are at. Hopefully when we fully recover from this trauma we shall resume normal service!

Morrissey, Cliff and Tom!

The news broke last week that a certain Stephen Morrissey is looking to have Cliff Richard and Tom Jones supporting him on dates in New York and Los Angeles in a couple of months time!

Tom Jones will play in LA on May 10th 2014 and Cliff Richard will play New York on 21st June 2014.

Cliff did an interview for the BBC on the day the news broke.

"Morrissey's a fan and he'd like you to be there." - Cliff's Manager to Cliff.

"I can't say that I've followed his musical career but I've followed the success. I've Googled him a couple of times now and I'm thinking, I could be a fan." - Cliff

" I've only heard that he likes me. The words were "he's a fan of yours" and that's enough for me to hear. It's a great honour for me to be asked by someone like him because no-one would expect him to ask me, and that's what I like about it." - Cliff.

Tidy Tune #48: Have Love, Will Travel - The 45's.

The lads have just released their latest EP 'Teenage Depression - Live On Canvey' and it's available at iTunes.

A Valentine's Day Special

So, it's that time of year again, February 14th, Valentine's Day! ( I hear men up and down the land gasp in shock as they have forgotten to get a card for the love of their lives!). But Valentine's Day is not the only day to express love or to receive love. It really should be an everyday thing, after all who on earth doesn't like to hear those words 'I Love You'?

It's also a day of despair for those who are single (especially the ladies), who would just wish that the guy that sits on the bus three rows from the back would at least notice them, even for just one day and maybe agree to go out on a date!

As we come together on this day maybe some music might brighten the day and lift your hearts and allow you to say things to someone you would never normally say.

So here's some fine tunes to set you up for the day. Enjoy.

Go and Love and Be Loved.

Declaration - The Alarm: 30 Years Old Today

It's a bit of a special day today for myself and a lot of my friends. Today, 13th February marks the 30th Year Anniversary of the release of an album by a band that I've loved from the moment I set eyes upon them supporting U2 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London in 1981. It had been a long wait for the album to come. Their debut single 'Unsafe Building' was released in 1981 and was backed by 'Up For Murder'.

In 1983 The Alarm had been out on the road in the USA supporting U2 on the 'War Tour'. In November that same year they went into the studio to record their debut album.

68 Guns became their first Top 20 Hit (peaking at #17) and it got them a spot on Top of the Pops.
On it's release, 'Declaration' peaked at #6 (though The Alarm's website states that it went Top 5!) in the UK Album Chart and #50 on the U.S. Billboard Charts.

 The Declaration Album
All songs written by Eddie MacDonald and Mike Peters, except where noted.

  1. "Declaration" — 0:45
  2. "Marching On" — 3:35
  3. "Where Were You Hiding When the Storm Broke?" — 2:56
  4. "Third Light" — 3:25
  5. "Sixty Eight Guns" — 5:49
  6. "We Are the Light" — 3:16
  7. "Shout to the Devil" (Macdonald, Peters, David Sharp) — 4:10
  8. "Blaze of Glory" (Macdonald, Peters, Sharp) — 6:04
  9. "Tell Me" (Sharp) — 3:14
  10. "The Deceiver" — 5:05
  11. "The Stand (Prophecy)" (Macdonald, Peters, Sharp) — 4:44
  12. "Howling Wind" — 6:44
Rolling Stone magazine wrote: "This is one of the best new live bands I heard last year, and they've put a lot of that power into their first album."
