Micky Fitz (1959-2016) - The Business RIP

Just heard the sad news this morning regarding the passing of Micky Fitz (Michael Fitzsimons) lead vocalist of Street Punk/Oi band The Business. He had been battling cancer the past year having being diagnosed last December and he had been undergoing treatment. His passing on 1st December has stunned many around the world with many bands offering tributes (The Bouncing Souls, Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Madball, GBH, and many more).

Micky Fitz was the one constant member in the band throughout all the years and the many line-up changes.

 The band posted a message on their FB Page that reads:

"As you may have already heard, Micky passed away yesterday morning after a long battle with cancer.

Micky was a man who spoke his mind - he was always quick with a joke and three steps ahead of you in a conversation. He was also one of the best mates you could ask for.

Everybody you speak to in the punk scene has their own Micky Fitz story, some of them more flattering than others as Mick didn’t pull any punches. He didn’t care what anybody thought of him and he always did things his own way. That is the thing about true characters - they have rough edges, they don’t fit into any box and they can be near impossible to deal with from time to time, but that’s what makes them so unique, it’s what makes them iconic, it’s what makes them special.

There will never be another Micky Fitz.

Our thoughts are with Mick’s family at this time, especially Kim and Jamie who have always been by his side through thick and thin.

Finally thank you to Micky, for being relentlessly Micky Fitz, much loved and much missed.

Micky has requested no flowers. If you would like to do something to remember him, please make a donation to Cancer Research in his name at Just Giving/Micky Fitz."

The remaining six tracks on the album were recorded Live at The Marquee in 1982.

*Was previously released as Mean Girl in 2008 on French label Bad Dog Records but that version only contain three studio tracks and the live tracks.

There are many different compilations released on different labels down through the years but the one that stands out for me is Under the Influence. The songs were drawn from various albums and releases over the years.

Let The Day Begin...Let The Day Start!: Day 337 - Junior Murvin

The Original Police and Thief (as it was called then) was released on the Wild Flower label in Jamaica in May 1976.

Featured on the record are: 
Boris Gardiner (bass), Ernest Ranglin (guitar), Sly Dunbar (drums), Keith Sterling (keyboards), and Joe Cooper (organ), with backing vocals provided by Barry Llewellyn and Earl Morgan of The Heptones. The B-Side Grumbling Dub, though not credited on the original label is The Upsetters.



Island Records released it in the UK July 1976 as a single and retitled it Police & Thieves. The song became an anthem in the UK in 1976 as the Notting Hill Carnival erupted into a riot. Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon of The Clash were involved in the rioting, which inspired them to cover the song on their debut album, in a style that they called ''punk reggae', not 'white reggae''.

In 1977 a new song "Bad Weed" by Junior Murvin was released in Jamaica on The Upsetters label and featured the backing track of Police and Thieves.

It was included on the 2003 CD Reissue.

It was backed with a Curtis Mayfield Cover

The single was again reissued in 1980 on a 12" containing some different mixes.



The single finally reached the charts four years after its initial release. This particular version of it was a response to the song being used in the film Rockers. Whilst the film was first shown in 1978 at the San Francisco Film Festival it didn't get a proper Theater release until 1980!

It peaked at #23 in the charts.

Today is the third anniversary of the passing of Junior Murvin and I thought that I would post his epic Police & Thieves album in his honour.

 Junior Murvin did actually release more music than Police & Thieves but it is this album that forever has cemented legacy and not just within the realms of the reggae world. With The Clash recording a cover of it for their debut album and playing it live most nights on tour they exposed a lot of youngsters to this magnificent slice of reggae that had been written about police brutality in Jamaica but somehow found itself to be a soundtrack for the violence of the times in the UK.

 The song gained a new lease of life four years later when included on the Soundtrack for the movie Rockers. Along with others that included the brilliant Tenement Yard by Jacob Miller, Slave Master by Gregory Issacs, Jah No Dead by Burning Spear, and Book of Rules by The Heptones, Natty Take Over by Justin Hines & The Dominoes plus more from Inner Circle, Bunny Wailer, Rockers All Stars*, Kiddus I,  Third World, The Maytones, Peter Tosh and Junior Byles.

 (* Some versions of the album replace this with Lee Perry and The Upsetters' Dread Lion)

 Junior Murvin even found himself on Top of The Pops as he saw his signature song rise to #23.

 After the original release of Police & Thieves he continued to release albums and singles on various labels and with different producers: Cool Out Son (with Joe Gibbs in 1979), Bad Man Possee (single and album with Mikey Dread in 1982), Apartheid (album and single with Prince Jammy in 1986 - was released in the UK on Greensleeves) and his last single Wise Man in 1998 (it was a 10" Split with Praise Him by Winston Fergus on Dubwise Productions). Albums included Muggers in the Street (1984 produced by Henry "Junjo" Lawes - released on Greensleeves in the UK), Signs and Wonders (1989 produced by Delroy Wright and Al Campbell for Live & Learn label. This was his last "official album").

 Junior Murvin will forever be remembered for one great song and I guess it is better to be remembered for a great song rather than a stinkingly bad one or worse, not remembered at all!

With my love for guitar driven rock and roll Every Eye Open by Chvrches is not an album anyone would expect me of all people to be listening to!

I should say by right this wouldn't qualify for one of my Albums of the Year for 2016 as it was originally released in September 2015 but due to a technical glitch and the reissue of an Extended Edition of the album back in July it does actually qualify for this year!

Now, normally I have to say that I loathe it when a record company does something like this not even a year after its original release and then release an Extended Version (so many labels seem to do it these days and rarely does anyone take them to task!). 

On this occasion though I'm letting go of my loathing of such craftiness because I probably wouldn't have taken much notice of the album had I not stumbled upon a live video of Chvrches (from sometime last year) during the summer and heard the song Bury It featuring Haley Williams of Paramore. After that first listen the song seemed to pop up in many different places during the summer of this year and I found myself casually tapping a toe or two along with it and then there was a gentle bob of the head followed by swaying (yes, swaying! Can you believe that!).

Investigating further led me to the album itself and it's an infectious little thing that caught me off guard. I don't really know enough about this particular style of music to say whether it is brilliant or down right rubbish but I do know that Every Eye Open (Extended Edition) caused me a lot of joy in 2016.

Now I had to find out a little more about them. I had seen their name around and kind of avoided them when they were on coverage of festivals on the TV because I assumed they would not be kind of thing that delighted me. 

The thing that amazed me about the group was that hail from Glasgow and that they have been on the go since 2011 and performed their debut gig at The Artschool in Glasgow 5th July 2012. They don't sound very "Scottish" - whatever that's meant to sound like!

Lauren Mayberry (vocalist of Chvrches) wrote a very good piece for The Guardian a couple of years back (this was something I discovered in the summer whilst finding out more about them) where she spoke about having to deal with hate and sexism via the internet. It's an absolute shocker that people could post such vile abuse about anyone and often without consequence!

I've been drumming up the courage to go and listen to their earlier album The Bones of What You Believe In - after all the sight of a 53 year old man swaying to the angelic sound of electronic pop is something you maybe do not need to see!

Best of 2016: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band - The River Tour 2016

It's been a bit of a busy year for Bruce Springsteen in 2016. Not only has he been out on tour performing 75 shows (would have been 76 but he pulled out of one in North Carolina) in support of The River Boxset but he's also released all 75 shows via his website, The Christic Institute Shows from 1990, an Autobiography (Born To Run) and a companion CD Chapter and Verse (as well as recording an Audio Book version of the autobiography) and undertaken a Book Tour as well.

 I thought instead of picking out one particular show from the Tour that I'd throw together a Playlist spotlighting the whole Tour. So below is that Playlist which does contain a few full shows (see below what shows are on it) and footage or audio from all 75 dates. This should keep you busy for a wee while!

Tour Statistics
Songs Played on Tour.

Whilst during the 1st US of the Tour the band played The River album insequence the remainder of the tour only saw it performed a couple of times. Fans hoping to hear maybe some of the outtakes that were released on The Ties That Bind boxset were to be disappointed as very few of them were actually played.

It's great to have all 75 shows from the Tour as a reminder of firstly what a great album The River is when played live and secondly what an amazing entertainer Bruce Springsteen is with sets each night lasting up to three and a half hours (and a couple breaching the four hour mark!). There's enough music within those 75 shows to keep the average Springsteen fan going until the next tour comes around!

Back To Basics was the first compilation from Billy Bragg and contained the mini-album Life's A Riot with Spy Vs Spy, Brewing Up With Billy Bragg and the Between The Wars EP. All were originally released on Go! Discs and enjoyed some chart success.

The Back To Basics part is simply "one man and his guitar" venting his spleen against the Thatcher Government and adding a plethora of poetic love songs and everyday life.

Live at the Factory Theatre, Sydney, 13th September 2013. The entire encore consisted of his debut album Life's A Riot with Spy Vs Spy (albeit in different order, it's tradition to close with A New England!)

 The standout track of the album for me is St. Swithan's Day.

In Germany St. Swithan's Day was released as a Single with A New England as the B-Side in 1984.
