Let The Day Begin...Let The Day Start!: Day 10 - Your Life Will Surely Change!

I've posted on here before about The The and Soul Mining being one of my favourite debut albums before so I won't go into that again, but for this series I did want to spotlight the song This Is The Day from the album.

For some reason, whenever I think of this song I always think of as well The Real Me by The Who and the question that Roger Daltrey sings "Can you see the real me, can you, can you?"

When I first heard the song way back in 1983 I didn't at first take too much notice of the lyrics. I thought it was a bit a happy sounding song about a day that changes your life. Then I sat down and really listened and it was a real eye opener. It's actually a song about duplicity and the perception that others have of you that is not quite the real you. On the other hand there is a longing in the heart that "life will surely change" and maybe reflect truly that more positive approach to life instead of that side of you "they never see".

There's no easy answers to this of course, and some go to therapy to deal with these complex life issues whilst others find some means of escape in order that they don't have to think too much about them and seem resigned to allow people to see them in one way whilst actually being the total opposite. Or in another scenario there are some folk who's lives are so troubled and maybe feel ashamed of things that have happened to them that they are quite happy to be able to put on a mask and hide "the side of you they'll never see". But "when you're left alone with the memories/That hold your life together like glue" it is then and only then you can be the real you!

I know it sounds simple to say just find someone you consider a true friend and share this dillema with them but it can be helpful because many of us share similar issues and there's almost a sense of relief that you are not alone in your dysfunction! I think when we do that, even a little bit at a time then we might indeed share in the joy of the day our lives surely changed!

This Is The Day - The The
Johnson and Markus

Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall is ticking the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days

You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky
This is the day your life will surely change
This is the day when things fall into place

You could've done anything, if you'd wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with the memories
That hold your life together like glue

You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky
This is the day your life will surely change
This is the day when things fall into place
