UB40 - Getting Over The Storm (Sept 2013)

Today UB40 release their 18th Studio album. It was actually due for release earlier but wasn't completed and the band had to cancel some tour dates in order to stay in the studio to finish it.

It will be the first album since 2010's 'Labour of Love IV'.

Current line-up Left to Right: Jimmy Brown (Drums), Earl Falconer (Bass), Brian Travers (Saxophone), Norman Hassan (Percussion,Trombone and Vocals), Robin Campbell (Lead Guitar and Vocals), Duncan Campbell (Lead Vocals) and Astro (Trumpet and Vocals).

UB40 are of course renowed for recording and performing cover versions but this new album is nothing like any of the previous releases which more often than not harped back to their reggae influences. 'Getting Over the Storm' finds the band drawing inspiration from the world of Country Music! (That was not a typo by the way! It's the plain truth UB40 and Country Music - that's not something you expect to hear in the same breath is it now?).

Cover songs include 'Midnight Rider' (The Allman Brothers), 'Getting Over The Storm' (George Jones), 'He'll Have To Go' (Jim Reeves), 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' (Willie Nelson) and the old depression classic from 1929 - 'How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live' (Blind Alfred Reed).

Having listened to it through once this morning I have to say that I'm quite impressed. Somehow I didn't think the blending of Country songs and Reggae would work well but it does.
