Music is the Doctor #17 September


So this week's Music is the Doctor is yet another fun collection of tunes the first and last tracks on the playlist are the only tracks not released in the month of September. The other 28 tracks cover many different years.

I wonder what musical goodies this September will bring us!


01 September Gurls (Live) - The Bangles
The ladies included this on their album A Different Light. It's an old Big Star tune and Michael Steele does a great job on vocals on it. The video is from the House of Blues.

02. The One I Love - R.E.M.
Document was released in 1987

03. Strength to Endure - Ramones
Taken from the album Mondo Bizarro released in 1992

04. Joey's on the Street Again - Boomtown Rats
From their Debut album released in 1977

05. A Day Without Me -U2
Lead single for their Debut album 'Boy' released in 1980. It was their third single.

06. Shopflifting - The Slits
From their Debut Album 'Cut' released in 1979.

07. Stereotype - The Specials
Fifth single from The Specials released in 1980.

08. Burden of Shame - UB40
From the Debut album 'Signing Off' released in 1980.

09. The Act We Act - Sugar
Opening track to the magnificent 'Copper Blue' released in 1992.

10. Millions Like Us - Purple Hearts
Debut single from Mod Revivalists released in 1979

11. The Bitterest Pill - The Jam
From the 1982 album 'The Gift'

12. Soldier Soldier - Spizzenergi
Indie Hit Single from Spizz and Co. released in 1979 it was backed by a great cover of Roxy Music's Virginia Plain.

13. I Shall Be Released - Tom Robinson Band
B-Side to their debut single 2-4-6-8 Motorway from 1977.

14. It Was Cold - The Ruts
From their epic Debut album The Crack released on Virgin Records in 1979.

15. You Say You Don't Love Me - Buzzcocks
Single taken from their third album 'A Different Kind of Tension'. Single was released in 1979.

16. Dreaming - Blondie
This is a live version of the single that appeared on Blondie's 1978 classic album Eat To The Beat. The single was released in September and the album followed a month later.

17. Found Out Too Late - 999
A cracking single from 999 that had a fantastic B-Side as well in Lie Lie Lie. The single was released in 1979.

18. Love My Way - The Psychedelic Furs
From their 3rd album Forever Now released in 1982.

19. Duchess - The Stranglers
From the 1979 Album The Raven.

20. Look Back In Love (Not Anger) - Yachts
Second single from Yachts released in 1978.

21. You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory - Johnny Thunders
Single released from the So Alone album. It was released in 1978 and was Johnny's second solo single.

22. Teenage Kicks - The Undertones
Released on Good Vibrations in 1978. The record came to the attention of John Peel and as a result The Undertones hit the big time.

23. Straw Dogs - Stiff Little Fingers
The fourth single from Belfast boys SLF, released in 1979 and reached #44 in the charts. One of their best singles I think.

24. Roadrunner - Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers
Released in 1975 originally as the debut single from Richman and the Modern Lovers. When it was re-released in 1977 it became a big hit.

25. (I'm) Stranded - The Saints
Released in 1976 by Aussie Punks The Saints. This debut is regarded as one of The Classic Tunes of the times.

26. Complete Control - The Clash
Absolutely smashing single from The Wonders of the Westway released in 1977. Still sounds absolutely stunning I reckon.

27. The History of the World Part 1 - The Damned
Released in 1980 and taken from the most excellent album entitled The Black Album.

28. I Couldn't Be You - UK Subs
The Subs released their debut album Another Kind of Blues on Gems in 1978. This track is the second on the album though the video is taken from the film Punk Can Take It. The Subs performance was filmed at the Lyceum Ballroom in London.

29. So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star - Patti Smith Group
A live version of The Byrds classic was released as a single in 1979. The video I've included is a live version from their Rockpalast show in 1979.

30. Wake Me Up When September Ends - The Defiled
Recorded for a Kerrang! Magazine project that covered the whole of the American Idiot album. Just love this cover of it.
