Let The Day Begin...Let The Day Start!: Day 42 - Just Like A Shelter

Luther Ingram had a hit with today's spotlighted song in 1972 (it was also included on his album 'If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right' (KoKo 1972) and the title of his version is I'll Be Your Shelter (In Time of Storm). The song appears to have been written by Carl Hampton, Homer Banks and Raymond Jackson.

The Housemartins version credits Lloyd Charmers with the lyrics. From what I can see Charmers didn't record it himself but he did produce BB Seaton's version in 1973 which was a B-Side to the single Lover's Quarrel.

The Housemartins added a few lyrics near the end of the song and whilst I wouldn't endorse totally their love for Karl Marx I actually have a real love for this song.

I've written before how we go through storms in this life and how we come out the other side of them. What I love about this song is that "in a time of storm" that there is the possibility of people standing beside us, helping us, "someone to share the load".

We can be that Shelter for people, just as folk have been a Shelter for us. Anyway, enjoy the song, and be a Shelter for someone today.

I'll Be Your Shelter (Just Like A Shelter)
Written by Carl Hampton, Homer Banks and Raymond Jackson (Lloyd Charmers?) with additional lyrics by The Housemartins

In times when you're troubled
Seems more than you can afford
And you feel, you feel you need a friend
Someone to share the load

And when your skies grow cloudy
I want you to know got a friend that's true
Just like a shelter, in a time of storm
I'll see you through, that's what I'll do

When your dreams are scattered
Just like the wind blown sand
And you feel, you feel you need a friend
I'll be there, reach out your hand

And when the tempest is raging
I want you to know got a friend that's true
Just like a shelter, in a time of storm
I'll see you through, that's what I'll do

I'll see you through your bad times
I'll see you through your fears
I'll see you through your hang ups
Honey I'll dry all your tears

And when the tempest is raging
I want you to know got a friend that's true
Just like a shelter, in a time of storm
I'll see you through, that's what I'll do

I will see you through, I will see you through
I will see you through, I will see you through

When my load got heavy, did you see me through
When my load got to hard to bear, did you see me through
What would you do, what would you do
What would you do, what would you do

If you're living on the dole and there's no sugar in your bowl
All you need to do is give a little knock
Don't despair he'll be there with his loving and his care
Marx will work for us right around the clock

He's alright, he's alright
He's alright, he's alright

The Housemartins Version
