Way back at the end of last year as part of the 45RPM Series I spotlighted the Debut EP from Buzzcocks, the record that had a huge impact upon how the bands saw that they didn't necessarily need the major labels in order to fulfill their dreams of putting records out. The DIY approach was taken on board by many bands up and down the land with varying degrees of success.

But back then it didn't seem possible to get by without a major and it didn't help that every major label were throwing themselves at bands to get them signed!

Buzzcocks ended up at United Artists along with The Stranglers and 999 and there followed between 1977 - 1980 a number of classic Pop infused Punk Singles that have hardly been bettered and eight of the 12 charted. The one that reached the highest in the chart and is probably the most well known is Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've).

It's a pretty cool song for one that was apprently written in the back of a van!

The B-Side is another in the long list of smashing flipsides that Buzzcocks did. It's a co-write with Alan Dial (who is reportedly their old manager Richard Boon - I have dropped him a message on Facebook asking him about it, if I get a response I'll let you know)

Of all the singles by the Buzzcocks it is probably the one that has been covered the most.

A Few Cover Versions
Fine Young Cannibals had a #9 hit with it back in 1986.

Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan have recorded a version for their latest 2016 album Take It, It's Yours. That certainly looks like an interesting album! I think I'll be doing a post on that quite soon!

Thursday did a version for the Soundtrack of Tony Hawk's American Wastland.

Nouvelle Vague did a cover on their 2006 album Bande à Part. In 2012, this cover was used for a commercial for the Kia Cee'd car for British TV. The band is seen rehearsing in the vehicle en route to a concert.

A cover by Pete Yorn appeared on the Shrek 2 soundtrack in 2004.

The indie rock band Noisettes released a cover version to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martens, in April 2010.

Kim Wilde covered the song for her 2011 album Snapshots and it was released as a single on 24 February 2012.

There's quite a few more as well, I'm sure you'll find 'em on You Tube. Some are good, others not so good (Will Young...shudder!).
