Melody Maker said of this Debut Album by Magazine, "no one that has the slightest interest in the present and future of rock 'n' roll should rest until they've heard Real Life".

Two of the earliest written songs on the album, Shot By Both Sides (which was also the Debut Single) and The Light Pours Out of Me were co-writes with Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks. When Howard Devoto left Buzzcocks he took that riff from what was to become Shot By Both Sides (Buzzcocks used the same riff on the B-Side of Promises in the song Lipstick). John McGeoch also contributed to The Light Pours Out of Me and other tracks on the album. Devoto was the main lyricist.

The album is regarded highly by many and in 2006 Uncut magazine had it listed at #37 on their 100 Greatest Debut Albums.

The reason for posting this today (not that I need a specific reason) was that I woke up this morning with The Light Pours Out of Me buzzing around in my head and checked to see if I had spotlighted this one yet, after noticing that I had shone the light on their second album Secondhand Daylight back in March I thought it would be a good idea to slip this one in.

I still have a lot of love for this album even after all these years.
