40 Years of Punk & New Wave: The Sounds of 1977 #4 Playlist

I've been a bit quiet on the blog for a few days, so apologies if you have been checking in to see if anything new had been posted. Was away in Wales for a few days and whilst the old spirit got a new boost, the mind and body seem to be crawling and unable to get anything done!

To combat this lethargy I thought I'd put together another playlist in The Sounds of 1977 series. Hopefully within the next few days I'll perk up somewhat and get back to writing something sensible! Until then enjoy this little slice of perfect noise from 40 years ago!

On The Playlist
The Wild, The Beautiful and The Damned - Ultravox!
From the Debut Self-Titled Album on Island Records in 1977 and one of my favourite tracks featuring John Foxx on the vocals.

I Feel Alright - The Damned
Last track on their impressive 1977 Debut for Stiff Records. A wonderful Cover of a classic Iggy and The Stooges tune.

Away From The Numbers - The Jam
Taken from the Debut album In The City and one of my absolute favourite songs written by Paul Weller.

Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
The Second Single taken from their Debut Album Talking Heads '77 on Sire.

I Hate The Rich - The Dils
Debut Single from First Wave LA Punks on What Records?

I Hate School - Suburban Studs
Second Single from Birmingham based band on Pogo Records.

School Days - The Runaways
The Joan Jett led Runaways with one of their great singles from the Waitin' For the Night Album. The performance I included on the Playlist is from The Old Grey Whistle Test on the BBC from 1977.

No Admission - Chelsea
B-Side of their Second Single High Rise Living on Step Forward Records.

Shadow - The Lurkers
Debut Single and first ever release on Beggars Banquet from The Lurkers. Was Re-released on Red, White and Blue Vinyl in 1978. I have included a 1977 Live performance from the Red Cow at Hammersmith on the Playlist.

Complete Control - The Clash
Third Single from The Clash and their response to CBS' release of their Second Single Remote Control!

Cranked Up Really High - Slaughter and the Dogs
Debut Single from Manchester based Punk band released on Rabid Records (TOSH-101).

Outside View - Eater
Debut Single on The Label from punk youngsters Eater.

Quite Disappointing - 999
B-Side of Debut Single I'm Alive on Labritain Records.

Submission - Sex Pistols
From the Single Sided Single that was given away with some copies of the Debut Album Never Mind the...

Love In A Void - Siouxsie & The Banshees
Taken from the 29th November 1977 John Peel Session (it was Broadcast on 5th December 1977). The song itself did not see the light of day until 1979 when it was released as a Double A-Side with  Mittageisen on Polydor Records.

Calling On Youth - The Outsiders
Title track from the Debut Album by Wimbledon Trio The Outsiders on their own Raw Edge Records. Bassist Adrian Boreland would go on to form Post-Punk band The Sound.

Safe and Warm/ Sick & Tired - Warsaw Pakt
Debut and only Single on Island Records. Both tracks were featured on their Debut Album Needle Time (pictured above) that was recorded and released within twenty four hours in November 1977. The album would be deleted a week later after reportedly selling 5,000 copies!

Punker - Le Ritz
Debut and only Single from Birmingham based Le Ritz on Breaker Records.

Punk Rockin' - East Coast Angels
Debut and only Single from Dublin based East Coast Angels. Only 500 copies of the Single were pressed. In 1978 they were finalists at the Limerick Civic Week Pop '78 Competition but were beaten into first place by some new band called U2!

Bored Teenagers - The Adverts
B-Side of their Second Single Gary Gilmore's Eyes on Anchor Records. Version on the Playlist is taken from a UK TV show called Impact from December 1977.
