Tidy Tunes 2019 #12/28 Crucial Moments - The Bouncing Souls

Crucial Moments - The Bouncing Souls
Rise Records
from the
'Crucial Moments' EP
Due for release 15th March 2019

Crucial Moments
The Bouncing Souls
We came together to honor an old friend
Let's talk about music
Good times and those moments in between

It felt like they didn't matter
They'd go on forever
Played on repeat
We shared a heartbeat
Let's have one more

One more crucial moment
One more crucial moment

We came together to honor a dear friend
Your presence was bigger
Than anything I've ever seen

It felt like it didn't matter
We'd go on forever
Played on repeat
We shared a heartbeat
Let's have one more
One more

One more crucial moment
One more crucial moment
One more round, one more sound
Spin it round
One more crucial moment

These chords stick with me
This ink etched on me
These crucial moments
Played on repeat on and on
This beat it will be
Forever giving me
These crucial moments
Played on repeat on and on
On and on

One more crucial moment
One more crucial moment
One more round, one more sound
Spin it round, never coming down
One more crucial moment

It would be easy for The Bouncing Souls to rest on their laurels when celebrating their 30th anniversary. After all, over those past three decades, the New Jersey punks have released ten full-length albums, toured all around the globe, and become one of the most respected bands of their scene. It would have been easy to sling together a selection of their best known work, write a new song or two, and hit the road for a nostalgia tour. But that’s not who The Bouncing Souls are and it’s not who they’ve ever been. Instead the four-piece—vocalist Greg Attonito, guitarist Pete Steinkopf and bassist Bryan Kienlen, who started the band in 1989, and were joined by drummer George Rebelo in 2013—decided to share Crucial Moments with the world. The new six-song EP captures who the band are now, and its accompanying book looks back on who they were and where they came from.

They will also be out on the road touring North America and Europe to celebrate. The UK dates are:

22nd October The Fleece Bristol
24th October St Lukes Glasgow
25th October Gorilla Manchester
26th October Electric Ballroom London

********************

The original four members of the Bouncing Souls all hailed from Basking Ridge, New Jersey but set up shop in New Brunswick, NJ in 1989. Although New Brunswick was a college town (it is home to Rutgers University) the band had actually made the decision to forgo further education in the classroom for life education in the sphere of Rock and Roll!

Their first recorded output came in the form of the Cassette EP in 1989 which was basically four demo tracks. It's a little different in sound to what they would become known for as it's almost like a Punk/Funk/Rap crossover!

Over the course of the next couple of years they released a few EP's that were brought together to form their Debut Album The Good, The Bad and The Argyle released on their own label Chunksaah Records in 1994.

Maniacl Laughter, released two years later included all the songs released on the The Ballad of Johnny X EP from 1995. What you get is 12 songs in 23 minutes and 44 seconds - just like a proper Punk Rock album used to be!

A good chuck of the album was written and recorded within the space of a week and within the month it was released! A tour with the band L.A. Punk band Youth Brigade (who had just released their album To Sell The Truth) brought them to the attention of Epitath Records with whom they would sign in 1997.

Simplicity - The Bouncing Souls (29th July 2016)

Simplicity - The Bouncing Souls
Rise/Chunksaah
Produced by John Seymour
Released 29th July 2016

It's been a four year wait for a new album from The Bouncing Souls and finally it's here...

The Tenth studio from New Jersey boys The Bouncing Souls was released yesterday and it's a bit like a step back in time to some of their earlier works (though at the same time still managing to sound current). They have even brought back Producer John Seymour who had produced their excellent How I Spent My Summer Vacation (2001) and Anchors Aweigh (2003).

It's the first album to feature George Rebello on drums (the former Hot Water Music drummer has been with the band since 2013).

Have only heard it a couple of times so far but it sounds pretty tidy to my old ears.

Let The Day Begin...Let The Day Start!: Day 27 - Better Things

I don't have much to say today because the song below says it all. It's a song that's been covered by many bands down through the years but my favourite is from The Gold Album by Bouncing Souls. The original of course was by The Kinks from 1981.

This one's for one and all who are struggling with life and all the heartache, pain, loss and whatever else comes to disrupt the flow.

Better Things
Songwriter Ray Davies

Here's wishing you the bluest sky
And hoping something better comes tomorrow
Hoping all the verses rhyme
And the very best of choruses to follow
Follow all the doubt and sadness
I know that better things are on the way

Here's hoping all the days ahead
Won't be as bitter as the ones behind you
Be an optimist instead
And somehow happiness will find you
Forget what happened yesterday
I know that better things are on the way

It's really good to see you rocking out
And having fun, living like you just begun
Accept your life and what it brings
I hope tomorrow you'll find better things
I know tomorrow you'll find better things

Here's wishing you the bluest sky
And hoping something better comes tomorrow
Hoping all the verses rhyme
And the very best of choruses to follow
Follow all the drudge and sadness
I know that better things are on the way

I know you've got a lot of good things happening up ahead
The past is gone, it's all been said
So here's to what the future brings
I know tomorrow you'll find better things
I know tomorrow you'll find better things

Here's wishing you the bluest sky
Wishing you the bluest sky
Hoping all your verses rhyme
Hoping all your verses rhyme
I hope tomorrow you'll find better things

The Soundtrack4Life Concert Series: Bouncing Souls/Hot Water Music/Dave Hause - Triple Header

A bit of a triple header from three bands/artists that I really have a fondness for. The first two are part of the Rockpalast series from Germany.

First up is Bouncing Souls, one of New Jersey's finest. I wonder what they put in the water in New Jersey as there's so many great bands/artists that spring from there!

Following is Hot Water Music, I do love Chuck Ragan's growl. It's a tremendous show from the Florida natives.

And lastly a show from Dave Hause filmed in Orlando. What I love about this show is that he spotlights a stack of songs from his magnificent Devour album. Warning there is some strong language at times throughout this show.

Hot Water Music - Dortmund, Germany 2012

Dave Hause - Orlando, Florida 2014 (I think)

Damascus, Melanin, Autism Vaccine Blues, Heavy Heart, Time Will Tell, Same Disease, Father's Son, Resolutions, We Could Be Kings, Come On Kid, The Bridge, The Shine, Worry by Northcote, Prauge, Benediction.

Let The Day Begin...Let The Day Start!: Day 18 - Friends

Friends. We all like to have friends don't we? I like the statement I read about what a true friend is: "A True Friend is someone who accepts who you are, but also helps you to become who you should be".

There's a lot of songs about friendship that I quite like, here's a few:

I just spent an hour with one of my best friends, who I don't see enough as both of us would like but there's always that connection as if we had just seen each other yesterday. And that's really precious.

Anyway, I had been thinking a little about friendship before he arrived and thought I'd post this today. The Bouncing Souls song True Believers is a fantastic spotlight on Friendship (and probably my favourite one on the subject). I love the line:

"I've got a few friends I'll love till I die
From all of these people I try to learn"
I have a few friends from down through the years to whom this lyric totally applies. These are the kind of friendships that matter the most to me.

True Believers
I've met some people along the way,
Some of them split some of them stay,
Some of them walk some walk on by,
I've got a few friends I'll love till I die
From all of these people I try to learn,
Some of them shine some of them burn,
Some of them rise some of them fall,
For good or bad I've known them all

We live our life in our own way,
Never really listened to what they say,
The kind of faith that doesn't fade away
We are the true believers
We are the true believers

Well you can fight or you can run,
Hide under a rock till the war is won,
Play it safe and don't make a sound,
But not us we won't back down
True believers all the way,
You and I...

We live our life in our own way,
Never really listened to what they say,
The kind of faith that doesn't fade away
We are the true believers
We are the true believers
True believers

Alphabet Beats #008: The Letter B is for...The Bouncing Souls

I've met some people along the way,
Some of them split some of them stay,
Some of them walk some walk on by,

We live our life in our own way,
Never really listened to what they say,

Think of New Jersey and more often than not your first thought would be Bruce Springsteen, your second might be Bon Jovi and your third Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Way down on the list might be a band who have been around since 1988 who hail from New Brunswick - The Bouncing Souls.

Since 1991 they have been releasing their own brand of Punk Rock and in that time they have released 14 EP's, 8 Split Singles, 9 Studio Albums, 2 Live Albums, filmed 2 Video Albums and 19 Promo Videos.
