Tidy Tunes 2019 #3/28: That'll Be The Day - The Crickets

It seems only right today to pick a classic tune that featured the late Buddy Holly as today is the 60th Anniversary of his untimely death along with The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens and pilot Roger Peterson (he tends to get forgotten often when people speak about the plane crash with the focus being just upon the rock and roll stars who lost their lives that day).

Buddy Holly was only 22 years old when he died. He had only three albums released, one with The Crickets (The "Chirping" Crickets - Brunswick 1957) and two under his own name (Buddy Holly - Coral 1958 and That'll Be The Day - Decca 1958) and around 18 singles between 1956-1959.

Since his passing there have been so many collections of his music released. Over on Discogs it currently stands at more than 300 Compilation albums!

Although Buddy Holly died four years before I entered this world (in 1963) his music has always been something that I can recall being a part of my life when I was a kid and even now as I am in my mid-fifties his songs still hold a special place in my heart.

The first "solo" album by Buddy Holly actually still featured The Crickets and there was still music being released as The Crickets on the Brunswick label and Holly's "solo" material was being issued on Coral. There were also a couple of releases on Decca under Buddy Holly's name. Brunswick and Coral were actually both subsiduaries of Decca! Goodness me, it's hard to keep up with it all!

At the time of the release of the Album Buddy Holly and The Crickets were on tour first in Australia and then played 50 shows in 25 days across the UK.

The album contains tracks that were released as singles in the US and the UK, a number of which are regarded as some of his finest tunes (Words of Love, Everyday, Peggy Sue, Listen To Me and Rave On).

I love this album to bits. It contains my favourite song of all-time as well - Rave On - so I'm more than a little biased!

I want to dedicate this to my friend Wooders who holds the music of Buddy Holly in such high regard and most importantly to the memory of my Dad, without whom I would not have had a lifetime love for the music of the goofy looking kid with the glasses from Lubbock, Texas.

Let The Day Begin...Let The Day Start!: Day 51 - Rave On

The Debut Solo album from Buddy Holly did infact feature The Crickets (Joe B. Maudlin on Bass and Jerry Allison on Drums) and was recorded between 8th April 1957 and 26th January 1958.

Back in March 1958 Buddy Holly was actually touring round England (Check out Buddy & The Crickets playing Ready Teddy somewhere in England from that Tour and also Oh Boy from the London Palladium - the track is from the show the rest is screen shots from it I presume. There's also some more footage here from that tour).

It's funny looking at this album all these years later because it is loaded with what we now consider to be Holly Classics. But back then it was all new, and the album didn't even chart!

I have a deep fondness for this album and the previous release The Chirping Crickets (1957). It's hard to fathom that a year later after the release of the solo album that he would die in a plane crash. Such a terrible loss.

I posted about Dion DiMucci the other day and mentioned that he was one of my earliest Musical Heroes. On top of the list sits Buddy Holly (I'm certain Dion wouldn't mind that at all).

I want to dedicate this piece today to my friend Wooders, he too has a deep and lasting love for the music of the Late Great Buddy Holly and it's nice to know I have company.

Music is the Doctor 2016 #5 Tribute To Buddy Holly

The Day The Music Died

On this day in history Buddy Holly, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Richie Valens all died in a plane crash close to Clear Lake, Iowa.

They had just played Clear Lake as part of their Winter Dance Party Tour and were flying on to Minnesota for the next date. The date at the Surf Ballroom had not originally been a part of the schedule.

This week's Music is the Doctor we celebrate the music of Buddy Holly. The playlist features music from Buddy Holly and the Crickets alongside a number of cover versions by artists as wide ranging as The Head Cat, Dion, Nick Lowe, The Black Keys, Kevin Montgomery, Graham Nash, Blondie, MxPx, Stevie Nicks, The Lemonheads, Imelda May, Patti Smith, The Guana Batz, and Go Cat Go and crowned off with Don McLean's fitting tribute 'American Pie'.

The August Album Challenge: 25. An Album Older Than Me

An album older than me, that should be easy.

One of the greatest albums ever I reckon! In 2003, the album was ranked number 421 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, 421 what planet are those people on! They think The Kardashians are talented so it's not like we could trust their judgement!

Today's Alphabet Beats is shorter than normal, we could have posted a truckload of music by Buddy Holly but settled for a 65 Track Compilation 'The Complete Buddy Holly: Before The Music Died'. A casual glance over the tracklist confirms that all the great tracks are there so without further ado...The Late Great Buddy Holly!
