The River Tour Kicks Off Tonight!

The Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh is the place to be tonight as The River Tour kicks off with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

All shows on the tour will be recorded and will be available from Springsteen's Website.

The S4L Boxset of the Year 2015: The Ties That Bind - The River Collection

The S4L Boxset of the Year 2015 was only ever going to have one winner.

Ever since Springsteen released the Darkness Boxset rumours abounded that a Boxset for The River was in the works and finally back in October this year, a day before the 35th Anniversary of the release of The River album it was announced that it would be released on December 4th.

I had even speculated a year prior to the annoucement what might be on the set and apart from a few things I was almost correct!

It was great seeing what could have been the album had it been released in 1979 as just a single album. I've had a bootleg of this for years and have always really liked it, especially the Rockabilly version of You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch) and the fact that Loose End was included to begin with.

Also good was seeing that songs that had been previously issued on the Tracks Boxset that were recorded during the making of The River are all brought together in one place (the 4th CD of the set. There's a number of my favourite Bruce tunes included in that little lot (Take 'Em As They Come, Roulette, Where The Bands Are, and Restless Nights).

The Crown Jewel of the Boxset has to be The Live Show from Tempe, Arizona filmed on 5th November 1980. And of course there are after little extras like the Note book with Springsteen's written words and a book with many unseen photos and the story of the making of The River Album.

Tonight on BBC4  (for viewers in the UK) you can get a chance to watch The Ties That Bind Documentary and the Tempe Show from 11pm. Set your recording devices so you don't miss it.

Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band To Play The River Every Night of 2016 Tour!

 It was announced yesterday on Springsteen's Website that each night of the up and coming tour that the band would play in sequence the whole of The River Album.

The news was greeted by fans with either wild cheering and estatic joy or intense criticism. But some people always find something to moan about regardless of what Springsteen chooses to do.

The possible win with this is that those who thought about going to multiple shows on the tour might save their money and allow other fans to get the opportunity to see the man in action! Whatever happens it's guaranteed to be a great show and maybe the "in addition to other Springsteen favorites" part of the show will throw up some different gems each night.

This was the last time he played The River in Sequence back on the 8th November in 2009 at Madison Square Gardens on the Working on a Dream Tour.

The Soundtrack4Life Concert Series: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Largo 24/11/80

 A final post in our Day in The River and I thought it would be good to finish it with an addition to the Concert Series.

The River Tour kicked off on 3rd October 1980 and 138 shows were played and the tour ended 14th September 1981.

On the 23rd and 24th of November 1980 Bruce and the E Street Band arrived in Largo, MD for a two night stand at the Capital Centre.

The quality of the film is not too brilliant.

 According to some sources the video tape survives as sound was recorded by hanging a microphone from the roof beams. The Springsteen camp insisted the sound was disabled on the in-house system to prevent bootlegging after the Largo show in 1978. Fortunately enterprising Capital Centre employees hooked up the microphone and ran a cable to a VCR recorder in an arena sky box. A Brucelegger always finds a way!

S4L's Day in The River! #4: The River Live

Songs from The River Album (and songs associated with the Album) have featured in live sets by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (and his solo work) and this post will have a look at the statistics since 1980 to ascertain what are the most played songs in Live Performance. To begin with though, he's only ever done it once, and it's probably unlikely he'll ever do it again, a full performance of The River album in sequence in New York back in 2009 stands as one of the best performances ever by Bruce and the band.

S4L's Day in The River! #2: The River - The Song

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played The MUSE series of No Nukes concerts held at Madison Square Gardens. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band headlined the 21st-22nd September 1979. Both were quite short sets by normal Bruce standards but they did stand out particularly for the inclusion of a new song called The River. On the first night he dedicated it to his brother-in-law and his sister, and on the second night to his Mother and his sister.

The song is an incredibly powerful one that is partly rooted in the harsh experience of Bruce's sister and her husband struggling with married life and unemployment and the trials and heartaches that follow. Whilst it was about them it also managed to transcend those two lives and reach out and touch others who also were going through the hardships of financial struggle, loss of direction and work and a relationship that had been fractured and severly in need of a fix.

It's a song that speaks so clearly of 'You can't always get what you want' (to use the Stones song title). Mary is a teenage girl, with a boyfriend that she's hoping is going to progress to marriage and the man of the song has left school and starting to do what his daddy had done and worked in construction in times of plenty when there was work and he too is maybe thinking of the possibility of not fooling around with Mary any more down where the fields are green but about getting serious and becoming man and wife. But life throws a curve ball or two and he gets a letter saying that his girl is pregnant and suddenly the dreams are out of the window for the pair of them. For Mary there would be "No wedding day smiles/ no walk down the aisle/ No flowers no wedding dress" and for her man just a "union card and a wedding coat".

Now there's a responsibility that's come upon them quicker than they imagined, a marriage, a new child and a new life that's about to take a big hit when the economy takes a downturn and he loses his job.

The hopes and dreams and trips to the river seem vanquished now as reality sets in and the thought of an easy life together suddenly evaporates: "Now all them things that seemed so important/Well mister they vanished right into the air". The song seems to give the impression that this has aged them to the point where they are bereft of hope to the point that he can no long remember the hopes and dreams and Mary acts like she doesn't care because whatever hopes she had they've all been dashed on the rocks! There's distance between man and wife now that only memories can hopefully rekindle. But they seem to bring little comfort either, they "haunt me like a curse".

Jeffrey B. Symynkywicz in his excellent book The Gospel According to Bruce Springsteen: Rock and Redemption, From Asbury Park to Magic  has amarvellous essay on The River, Life Keeps Rollin' Along (Chapter 5) and sums up talking about the song with these words which I think are excellent:

"They may have precious little to show for their exhaustion. Their river has run dry, and they lie bitter and broken beside its banks. But if those memories still have the power to haunt them, then perhaps they are, at least, still alive. Perhaps something of that old passion still stirs within them, if it can still hold power over them. The river of life - in all its fluidity and transitoriness and change - still offers their best hope of transformation. They will never pretend again that it can be easy. The small hope that it may at least be possible must be enough." (p66)

Seeing as today is the official release day for The Ties That Bind - The River Collection I thought we'd kick the day off with some live versions of a few tunes that are featured on the new boxset. 

Also, I'm hoping throughout the day to do some more posts that are related to The River album and this new collection.

These are four of my favourite Springsteen tunes and it's incredible to think that they never made the album. Loose Ends was considered for inclusion when it was touted as a single album in 1979.

Springsteen Announces The River Box Set...Finally!

For the past few years there have been rumours of it appearing but at long last it has been officially announced...THE RIVER BOX SET IS ON THE WAY!

Official word was given on Springsteen's Website late yesterday. Release date is 4th December so just in time for...oh wait, this will be first mention of it...Christmas! There are links to pre-order it from Amazon and iTunes (though why anyone would want to order from there and not have the proper package to have to hold is beyond me!). It is currently listed on Amazon for $129.98 but Backstreets has it listed for $114. I haven't seen it yet on any of the UK sites so do not know what it will be selling for here.

It's pretty much 35 years to the date of the release of The River that this announcement appears (the album was released on the 17th October 1980).

So what is in this magical box? Around this time last year I had posted what I would like to see in the box and apart from a couple of things I almost got it correct!

The album was not envisaged as being a double album at the start of recording but in 1979 Bruce seemed already to go with a Single album after turning into Columbia but changed his mind and felt that more was needed.

Bruce shared in Songs:

...All the years I'd been performing, I'd often start the show with something that sounded like it came out of the garage. In the past, these were the kinds of songs that fell by the wayside when we went into the studio to record. For The River, I wanted to make sure this part of what I did wouldn't get lost.
 After some recording we prepared a single album and handed it in to the record company. When I listened to it later on, I felt that it just wasn't good enough. The songs lacked the kind of unity and conceptual intensity I liked my music to have. So we went back into the studio and another year went by.... We decided to make The River a double record. I'd try for the best of both worlds: more pop songs in a looser conceptual framework.

“The Ties That Bind” is a brand new 60-minute documentary produced and directed by Grammy and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny that features an intimate interview with Springsteen as he reflects on the tumultuous, extended period writing and recording ‘The River.’ The film transitions between Springsteen telling the stories behind the music — and illustrating them with solo acoustic guitar performances — interspersed with period concert footage and rare photos of Bruce and the band in and out of the studio.

The final video component is “Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band: The River Tour, Tempe 1980,” a new film produced from footage professionally filmed in 1980 using four cameras and recorded in multitrack audio. The film features 24 songs — 2 hours, 40 minutes — on 2 DVDs from Springsteen’s November 5, 1980 concert at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. Widely regarded as one of Springsteen’s finest performances, this intense show features early live versions of over half of ‘The River’ songs.

‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ is packaged in a 10” x 12” box with a hardcover 148-page coffee table book containing 200 studio and live photographs — most of which have never been seen before — plus pages from Springsteen’s notebooks, single covers, images and outtakes from the original album package, and other memorabilia documenting the album.

It all sounds so exciting and totally worth the wait I reckon.

Into The River We Dive - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Things have been a bit quiet for me the past few days as I've been away camping and have had the chance to catch up on some listening. Just picked up the above show from 2009 of Bruce and the E Street Band. This is a newer recording (I have a few others of the same show) and is way better quality than I could have imagined.

It's a shame that he hasn't repeated the playing of the album as he has done with 'Born to Run', 'Darkness at the Edge of Town' and 'Born in the U.S.A.' as it sounded quite amazing hearing all the songs placed in their proper context.
