UK Subs - XXIV (February 2013)

Current Line Up Left to Right: Jamie Oliver (Drums), Alvin Gibbs (Bass, Vocals), Jet (Guitar, Vocals) and Charlie Harper (Vocals, Harmonica)

Twenty Fourth album from one of the premier Punk bands on planet earth!

Charlie Harper doesn't know the meaning of the word slow down and at his age you would have thought he would have thrown in the towel and have his slippered feet up reading the newspaper at home and enjoying a much deserved retirement. Not so. He has gathered the crew around and set about topping their last album - Work in Progress (released in 2011) and you know something, they have topped it and thrown a fair few surprises into the mix - a nice bonus of 12 Acoustic Songs!!

You'd be surprised if you think that the UK Subs are just Charlie Harper with a few lads as backing band you'd be very wrong in making that assumption because the band have all contributed to this album. Charlie of course does all the vocals apart from on 'Black Power Salute' and 'Stare at the Sun' which Alvin Gibbs takes the lead. Gibbs has also written songs for the album and so has drummer Jamie Oliver and guitarist Jet. On the acoustic tracks Charlie and Alvin split the vocals between them.

A few people in reviews have pointed out that 'Coalition Government Blues' seems a little out of place but the harp driven song written by Alvin Gibbs shows that even at 68 years young Charlie and the UK Subs have still got something to say and to me it fits perfectly.

The UK Subs do what they have always done, and musically it's not rocket science (that's not a criticism by the way) and so the inclusion of the 12 acoustic tracks is somewhat a huge surprise. Among the acoustic tracks is a great cover version of Ian Hunter's 'Angel of Eighth Avenue' and other standouts include 'The Outsider' (penned by Harper) and 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind' (Jamie Oliver and Alvin Gibbs).

In a recent interview Charlie was asked what would happen after the Subs had completed an album for every letter of the alphabet, I loved his answer, "Hey let us get there first but we will still be on the road. I will just be too old to remember new songs."

Prior to it's original release back in 1988 I had only dabbled with R.E.M., I liked a track here and there but was not overly concerned with them being on my musical radar. That all changed with the release of 'Green'. For me it sounded like a breath of fresh air with some fantastic songs like 'Pop Song 89', 'You Are The Everything', 'Stand', 'Turn You Inside Out' and my favourite 'World Leader Pretend'.

Listening to the album as I put this piece together has just reminded me what a great body of work it is, I'm hard pressed to say that there's a bad track on it. I guess that a lot of fans of their previous albums would be in for a shock at how pop/rock orientated it was (more than a few had declared that the band had "sold out" with their sigining to Warners), but for me that was its' charm.

The Cure - Mexico 21st April 2013

What a way to celebrate your 54th birthday - Up on stage peforming for Four Hours and Sixteen Minutes!!

That's exactly what Robert Smith did a couple of days ago in Mexico. Prior to the start of the show there was an earthquake that registered 5.9 on the Richter scale.

Journalist Bernard Van Isacker of website Side-line.com, who was in the audience during the terrifying moment, posted online: "I thought that I was losing my balance as I felt the ground drifting away from under my feet. Then people started screaming and I was told that an earthquake was taking place.
"I could see those big station spot posts shaking back and forth as if there was a huge storm taking place. Instantly all communication via mobiles was also interrupted as thousands were trying to call their family."

Thankfully no one was injured during the event and the band stepped it up with an amazing 50 song set!

I've tried to find as many video links as I can from the show and the sound and visual quality of each link is not my responsibility.

The Strypes - Kids Who Can Play The Blues!

I always like discovering new things (well new to me) and so today, thanks to my friend Bob from Philadelphia, it's a band of young Irish lads called The Strypes.

Formed in Cavan, Ireland in 2011, the band who are between the ages of 15-17 seem to be getting a lot of attention and have an album due out later this year on Mercury Records. What amazes me about them is there blues sound at such a young age. The energy of the early Dr Feelgood and an obvious love for all things Blues. Well worth keeping an eye on I reckon.

Latest single is 'Blue Collar Jane'.

On Record Store Day they were performing with Paul Weller at Rough Trade East! Click Here to See a Performance of  Route 66.

37 Years Ago Today...

23rd April 1976 was the day The Ramones released their debut album on Sire Records. It cost $6,400 to make over a period of seven days and contains 14 songs that come in at under 30 minutes! There's no guitar solos, no pompus musical arrangements, just plain old rock and roll played at breakneck speed.

It was an album that for many changed their whole musical landscape and 37 years on it still sounds incredible.

"Hit it Dee Dee...1-2-3-4!"

The Primitives - Echoes and Rhymes (2012)

Eveything written in THIS COLOUR is a link, so give it a click to watch and listen to the music.

   2. “Turn Off The Moon
   3. “Move It On Over
   4. “Sunshine In My Rainy Day Mind
   5. “Till You Say You’ll Be Mine
   6. “I’m Not Sayin’
   7. “The Witch
   8. “I Surrender
   9. “Amoureux D’une Affiche
 10. “Where Will You Be?
 11. “Single Girl
 12. “Who Are You Trying To Fool?
 13. “Time Slips Away
 14. “Wild Flower

It's almost a year since the release of the first album for 21 years by The Primitives and for some odd reason I only picked it up this morning! Oh well that's the way it is sometimes but can I say just at the start that this is a really impressive collection of cover versions. Cover versions? Oh man, isn't a band who puts out an album of covers just out to make a quick buck and show that they have lost the plot? I guess normally that would be the line that I would take but on this album I'm going to make an exception.

The band got back together following the death of original bassist Steve Dullaghan in February 2009. That same year in October they performed their first shows together for 19 years in Coventry and London. In 2010 they did a tour of the UK and also played a single show in Brooklyn, New York.

In March 2011 The Primitives released their first new music since 1992. The EP 'Never Kill A Secret' contained two new songs and two cover versions ('Need All The Help I Can Get' - Suzi Jane Hokum (released in 1966) and 'Breakaway' released in 1966 by Toni Basil).

The Originals
The album of covers focuses attention on 1960's Female Fronted Bands or Vocalists. It kicks off with a b-side from Reparata and The Delrons called Panic. Next up Sue Lyon's 'Turn Off The Moon'. Le Grand Mellon are up next and it's a cover of 'Move It Over'. 'Sunshine on My Rainy Mind' by Polly Niles. Vocal duties on 'I'm Not Sayin'' are taken by guitarist Paul Court, who gives a very JAMC performance of Nico's 1965 song. 'The Witch' by obscure German duo Adam and Eve is followd by the 1969 'I Surrender' originally released by Bonnie St. Claire. Tracy tries her chops by singing in French on 'Amoureux D'une Affiche' (released in 1967 by Laura Ulmer). I can't find a link for Dana Gillespe's 'Where Will You Be?' (from the 1968 album 'Foolish Dreams'. 'Single Girl' by Sandy Posey is next up. Unlike most of the songs on the album this track was actually an international hit! 'Who Are You Trying To Fool' by Little Ann is an obscure Northern Soul number that appeared in the late 1990's on Ace Records. 'Time Slips Away' was originally released by Dutch artists Shocking Blue in 1973, they are probably more well known for their song 'Venus'. Completing the album is 'Wild Flower' by She Trinity that was released as their third single in 1966 on Columbia Records.

Totally love this album. I like the fact that they have chosen songs that are obscure. I actually only knew the Nico track beforehand.

Good to see them back and hopefully we don't have to wait too long for an album of brand new music written by the band. The great news is it that might happen sooner than we think as in February they released a brand new single.

The Boys - First Two Albums Reissued

Back when I was a kid, all of 14 years old (such a long time ago now...1977) one of my favourite bands at the time was The Boys. I was fortunate enough to see them a few times back in the early days at The Marquee and The Greyhound in Croydon. They are still on the go today and hopefully will be releasing a brand new album sometime this year.

They begun life in 1976 playing their debut show at the famous Hope and Anchor in Islington after being put together by Casino Steel and Matt Dangerfield. In early 1977 they signed a deal with Nems Records and thus began the journey of producing a great body of work that down through the years seems to have survived to this day.

They released a couple of great singles, the first, released in April 1977, being 'I Don't Care' backed by 'Soda Pressing'.

Later in the summer of 1977 they released their 2nd single, that brought them a whole heap of praise from the music press and John Peel liked them it and them so much he brought them in for a studio session. The Peel Session broadcast in August 1977 included six songs:

    Sick On You
    The 1st Time
    Cop Cars
    Box Number
    Living In The City
    Rock Relic

'First Time' was backed by 'Turning Grey' and 'Watcha GonnaDo'. The single, which surely had "hit record" written all over was stopped in it's tracks due to the death of Elvis (Nems were distributed by RCA who turned their focus to making sure there were enough of Presley's records in the shops and thus scuppered the rise of The Boys!).

Their debut album would also be late appearing in the shops, again due to issues with Nems. But when it arrived, boy what a great album it was loaded with fantastic power-punk tunes.

Now it's been reissued with a bonus disc of demos and b-sides and other rarities.

Track listing for both albums.

And the bonus discs

Also reissued is their second album (released in 1978) 'Alternative Chartbusters' which includes probably one of the best singles ever in 'Brickfield Nights' backed by 'Teacher's Pet'.

They would also do another session for Peel that was broadcast on the 2nd May 1978 and it included four songs:

    T.C.P.
    Brickfield Nights
    Classified Suzy
    Boys

Both albums are available from Amazon or checkout Full Details at The Boys Website and click on Fire Reissues.

Also checkout an Interview with Matt Dangerfield that he did with Uber Rock
