S4L Radio: Show #2

Number Two (no, not that kind! 🙉) and once again we have loads of interesting sounds to blow our minds.

A couple of new tracks, A-Sides, a B-side, album tracks and a wee spotlight on The Songs of The Who...more like a small torch rather than a spotlight if you catch my drift! 😀

Enjoy.

There's a few links down below where you can listen to even more music!

On The Playlist
Radio Song - R.E.M.
Kicking off the show a wee gem from Atlanta's finest (well okay, second finest...The B-52s just beat them to it!)

A Two-Play Connection:
Half A Boy & Half A Man - Nick Lowe
One of my favourite British Songwriters and a dab hand at producing many of the early singles on Stiff Records as well as a number of singles and albums for Elvis Costello and The Attractions.

Queen of Hearts - Dave Edmunds
An Englishman, a Scotsman and a couple of Welshmen walk into a studio...no it's the start of a bad joke (or even a good joke!)...rather it's what happened when Rockpile gathered together to record two albums, one for Nick Lowe and one for Dave Edmunds.
Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds of course are part of Rockpile, and Nick was involved in making the Repeat When Necessary Album at the same time as recording his Labour of Lust album (that Mr Edmunds also played on).

Old, New, Borrowed and Blue
Segment

Old
Jolé Blon - Gary US Bonds (with Bruce Springsteen)
Single released from the brilliant Dedication album by Soul Legend Gary US Bonds who got a little help from Bruce and Little Steven making the album.
The music of Gary US Bonds was no stranger to Springsteen of course as he had been playing Quarter To Three for years as part of his live set.

New
White Man's World - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Taken from the excellent new album The Nashville Sound, this is one of the standout tracks.

Borrowed

It's All Over Now Baby Blue - Dion
Dion DiMucci's take on Dylan's little cracker of a song. From the 1969 album  Wonder Where I'm Bound on Columbia Records. Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet recorded a version of the song for their Under The Covers project using the Dion version as the inspiration.

 Blue
Union City Blue - Blondie
Still the best tune by Blondie ever (I reckon so anyway!)

Gigantor - The Dickies
On the road with the Vans Warped Tour 2017 along with a host of other bands (much younger than themselves).

Three Sevens Clash - The Alarm
From the first in the Counter Attack Collective Series of EPs released in 2007.
Next month The Alarm will be doing a huge Tour in the States with a number of the shows being a part of the Vans Warped Tour 2017.

Songs of The Who
Going Mobile - The Who
From the excellent 1971 album Who's Next. Usually it's the first and last track which get the glory on the fifth studio album by The Who but I've always loved this track. It was also included as the B-Side of the Behind Blue Eyes single in November 1971.

The Kids Are Alright - Dropkick Murphys
From the album Mob Mentality released in 2000 that saw the band team up with UK Street Punk band The Business.

Disguises - The Jam
B-Side of the brilliant Funeral Pyre single.

Dreams...
Daydreaming - Paramore
From their 2013 Self-titled #1 album.

Is It A Dream - The Damned.
The single stalled at just outside the Top 30 (#34) in 1985 and was on their Phantasmagoria album which reached #11 in the UK.

Don't Lose Your Dreams (Excerpt From A Teenage Opera Part 154) - Pete Wylie & Wah! The Mongrel....
It's a three way toss up between this, The Story of The Blues and Seven Minutes to Midnight as to what my favourite Pete Wylie track is. But this one wins out today for it's sheer positivity.

I Don't Want To Change The World, I Just Want To Change Your Mind - Squad Five-O
Developed from a Punk/Ska band to a full on Rock and Roll band. This is taken from their fouth album which was self-titled and released on Tooth 'n' Nail Records in 2002.

The "Oh My Goodness You Have That Record" Spot!
Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
In 1977 being a Punk Rocker meant that music like this was considered a bit of a no no by some quarters! But, if you like a song then surely it should matter not whether or not it fits into the little boxes of musical taste that you make for yourself.
Gabriel had been a part of Genesis between 1967-1975 and this was his first venture into the world as a Solo Artist.
Gabriel said of the song, "It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get ... It's about letting go."
The single peaked at #13 in the UK Singles Chart and #68 in the USA.
I always loved the B-Side of this - Moribund The Burgermeister!

Is This The Life We Really Want? - Roger Waters
Title track from the brand new album by Roger Waters. Haven't listened to the album enough to make an informed assessment of it but it is quite fascinating.

The Parting Shot
Exit - U2
I've included the live version that appears in the Rattle and Hum film. They are of course currently on tour performing The Joshua Tree from start to finish. Live footage of them performing Exit has been quite something to see for their no holds barred assessment of the President!
