ACTION TIME VISION A Story Of Independent UK Punk 1976-1979 (December 2016)

Very excited to see that Cherry Red Records are preparing for release in December what looks like a cracking boxset featuring some of the finest Punk singles that were released on various labels between 1976-1979.

I know there always seems to be a lot of these type of albums appearing, you know like The Best Punk Album in the World, Classic Punk, Teenage Kicks etc but they, more often than not, focus their attention on Punk/New Wave tracks that usually had some chart success. What Cherry Red have done is to dig deep into the heart of singles that appeared on the early Independent labels like Stiff, Raw, Small Wonder, Good Vibrations, Rough Trade, Chiswick, Step Forward, Beggars Banquet and a host of one off labels.

Some of the artists of course went on to some bigger and better things: The Killjoys - Dexys Midnight Runners; Johnny and the Self Abusers - Simple Minds; Leyton Buzzards - Modern Romance (okay maybe that was not a case of better things!); and  The Pack - Theatre of Hate & Spear of Destiny.

Also it's quite remarkable that a good number of these bands are still today playing live and making new music with some personnel changes along the way: The Damned, The Lurkers, The Rezillos, Sham 69, The Boys, Gary Numan (Tubeway Army), Stiff Little Fingers, Skids (have got some dates coming up soon), The Members, Angelic Upstarts, New Order (Joy Division), Peter Hook & the Light (Joy Division), The Fall, Chelsea, Spizz (Spizz Energi), Ruts DC, The Wall, Adam Ant, Cockney Rejects, Kirk Brandon (Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny), Vice Squad and maybe a few others as well!

It's actually quite funny looking at the proposed tracklist for the album because, apart from a couple of tracks, that looked like a selection from my record collection was back between when I was 13-16 years old! Some of these I haven't heard for more than 30 years!
